Designing for Fresh Grocery Delivery
Grocery delivery has become a rising trend for people to shop easily and efficiently. In urban areas, to use a bicycle for delivery could have been a great option due to its mobility and accessibility, but in practice with the difficulties to maintain the ambient temperature of food and stabilize the package to avoid food broken or leaking, bicycle delivery is the least used method so far. Besides, the overuse of packaging for grocery delivery posts negative environmental impacts since people don’t get the information on how to recycle multiple insulated plastic materials and the waste ends up in the landfill.
Ryan Yang provided a sustainable packaging solution for bicycle grocery delivery that can keep the food in a good quality and stay steady on a bicycle. He designed a cardboard delivery box for bicycle delivery that had insertable passive cooling panels on both sides and corrugated handles to guide the consistent airflow into the box, and with the good ventilation it can lower the temperature down to about 9° F in 15 min. Besides, he designed the add-on metal sheets for the bicycle rack that helped the delivery box easily be installed on the bicycle and stay steady. He also researched the folding templates of boxes and used cardboard as the only material that can be reusable and recyclable.
He combined the functionality and simplicity of his design and the high mobility and usability of bicycles to create an opportunity for a more accessible and sustainable delivery system for communities to get their groceries on time and fresh.
